🇹🇿 Tanzania｜5 Things You May Not Know
Tanzania is located in East Africa and has a population of more than 72 million people.
When people think of Tanzania, they may think of African wildlife, the vast savanna, or Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.
But did you know there are also important things to understand about Tanzania from a missions perspective?
1️.🌍 Tanzania is more than just “one people”
Did you know?
Tanzania is home to around 154 different people groups, each with its own culture, language, and way of life.
According to Joshua Project, 24 people groups are still considered UUPGs (Unengaged Unreached People Groups), representing approximately 6.52 million people.
Although Tanzania has many Christians, there are still people—and even entire people groups—who have not truly had the opportunity to hear the Gospel.
👉 This is one important reason why we pray for Tanzania.
2️.☪️ Tanzania has many Christians, but not every area is the same
Many people may not realize that, although Tanzania has a significant Christian population, the religious situation varies greatly from region to region.
For example, Zanzibar has a strong Islamic influence on local society and family life, and some people groups have very few Christians.
So, having many Christians in Tanzania does not mean that every people group has heard the Gospel.
👉 Pray that the Lord would have mercy on those who have not yet had the opportunity to know Jesus.
3️.🗣️ Swahili is a bridge of communication
One unique feature of Tanzania is Swahili.
Swahili is not only an important language in Tanzania, but is also widely used across East Africa.
People from different ethnic groups can communicate with one another through Swahili.
👉 Pray that the Lord would use this common language as a bridge for the Gospel, opening doors for more people to hear God’s Word.
4️.📖 Having Christians does not mean there are enough Bibles
We might think:
“Tanzania already has many Christians, so there must be plenty of Bibles.”
But there is still a need for greater access to Scripture and biblical resources.
Joshua Project lists Tanzania at Bible Shortage Rank 6. The lower the ranking number, the more significant the Bible shortage is considered to be.
👉 Pray for the provision of Bibles, Bible translation, discipleship, and church development, so that believers will not only come to faith but also continue to grow through God’s Word.
5️.👧🏽👦🏽 Tanzania is a very young nation
Did you know?
Around 40% of Tanzania’s population is under the age of 14.
This means that children and young people are a very important mission field.
When the Gospel reaches a child, it can impact not only that child, but also their family—and even the next generation.
👉 Pray for wisdom for local churches as they reach the next generation through children’s ministries, education, family ministry, and discipleship.

- Pray for peace and stability. Tanzania remains in a politically sensitive period. President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the ruling CCM party continue to lead the country, while the controversial 2025 presidential and parliamentary elections drew significant attention and deepened social tensions. Pray that God would grant wisdom, peace, reconciliation, and stability to the nation.
- Pray for the Church. Churches in Tanzania have long served communities through education, healthcare, and social care, especially in areas with limited infrastructure. Pray that the Lord would continue to use the Church as an instrument of peace and hope.
- Pray for the 24 UUPGs. Ask the Lord to raise up more workers to enter these communities, so that those who have not yet heard the Gospel may have the opportunity to know Jesus.
- Pray for children and young people. Ask the Lord to protect them and open opportunities for them to hear the Gospel, know Christ, and become His disciples from an early age.
