Ethiopia Frontline Prayer | Standing Firm Under Persecution

According to the Open Doors World Watch List 2026, Ethiopia ranks No. 36 among countries where Christians face persecution. While Joshua Project estimates that about 61% of the population identifies broadly as Christian, with approximately 17.9% being Evangelical, nearly 23.6 million people still belong to unreached people groups.
Although Ethiopia has a long Christian history, the reality for many believers remains challenging.
Large Muslim communities are concentrated in eastern and northeastern Ethiopia, as well as in areas east and southeast of the capital, Addis Ababa. In these regions, believers who have come to faith in Christ from a Muslim background often face rejection by their families, isolation from their communities, and even threats to their safety. Open Doors also reports that denominational protectionism, religious extremism, ethnic conflict, and regional violence continue to place heavy pressure on many Christians.
These challenges are not just statistics—they are the daily reality for M2M missionaries.
Missionary Ashenafi serves primarily in a Muslim-majority community. Because persecution against Christians is severe, believers can only gather through small underground fellowships.
Many Somali-background believers living in Ethiopia face intense pressure from their families, relatives, and local communities after choosing to follow Christ. To protect new believers and ministry workers, fellowship meetings and discipleship training must be conducted quietly and discreetly.
Many Somali people have lived in eastern Ethiopia for generations, long before modern national borders were established. Today, most live in Ethiopia’s Somali Region along the border with Somalia. In recent years, additional Somali refugees have fled into Ethiopia because of conflict and drought. Following the fighting in Las Anod in 2023, approximately 100,000 people crossed into Ethiopia seeking safety.

- Pray that underground fellowships and discipleship groups will remain safe and continue growing despite persecution and opposition.
- Pray that Somali-background believers will remain steadfast in their faith and experience God’s comfort and presence even as they face rejection and pressure from those around them.
