🇹🇲 Turkmenistan｜A Country Rarely Seen by the World
Have you ever heard of Turkmenistan?
Located in Central Asia, Turkmenistan faces the Caspian Sea and shares borders with Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
For many people, Turkmenistan is a country they know very little about. But if we take some time to learn about it, we discover a land with a rich history and culture.
More importantly, there are many people here whom we need to remember in prayer.
🏺 A Place That Was Once Important Along the Silk Road
It may be difficult to imagine that Turkmenistan, a country that receives relatively little attention today, was once an important place for exchange between East and West.
Ancient Merv, located in present-day Turkmenistan, was once an important city along the Silk Road. Merchants, travelers, and scholars from different places passed through this land.
The history of this ancient city can be traced back approximately 4,000 years.
A place that once connected different peoples and cultures is still home to many different ethnic groups today.
🙏 Pray that the Lord will also make a way for the Gospel in this land, crossing language, cultural, and ethnic barriers and entering people’s lives.
🧶 A Carpet Can Also Tell the Story of a People
Turkmen traditional carpets are well known.
Different ethnic groups have their own distinctive patterns and weaving techniques. These skills are not simply mass-produced in factories; they are part of a culture passed down from generation to generation through families.
For the Turkmen people, carpets are more than decorations in their homes. They carry their history, family heritage, and culture.
This reminds us that every people group has its own story, culture, and way of life.
🙏 Pray that the Lord will teach us to respect different peoples and cultures, and raise up Gospel workers who understand the local culture and can introduce Jesus to them in appropriate ways.
🏜️ A Vast Desert Is Also Home to Many People
Most of Turkmenistan is dry and desert-like, with the Karakum Desert being the most well known.
What we may see as a vast desert is home to many people. This is where they work, live, raise their children, and pursue their own dreams and hopes.
🙏 Pray that we would not simply see a country, but that we would see every person living on this land.
🌍 The Need for the Gospel Here Is Greater Than We May Imagine
Turkmenistan has a population of approximately 7.6 million.
According to Joshua Project, there are currently about 28 people groups, of which 20 are still considered unreached people groups (UUPGs).
What deserves even greater attention is that approximately 95% of the population lives within unreached people groups.
This means that there are still many families and people groups who need someone to bring the Gospel to them.
🙏 Pray that the Lord will raise up workers to go among these people groups who have not yet heard the Gospel.
☪️ Many People Grow Up in a Muslim Cultural Background
Turkmenistan is predominantly Muslim.
For many people, their families, culture, and way of life are deeply influenced by Islamic traditions.
But having a religious background does not mean that a person truly knows God.
Some people grow up knowing their religion, yet may have never truly heard the Gospel of Jesus.
🙏 Pray that the Holy Spirit will work personally in people’s hearts, causing them to seek the truth and preparing opportunities for them to encounter Jesus.
✝️ Following Jesus Is Not Easy Here
Christians are a minority in Turkmenistan.
Joshua Project estimates that Christians make up approximately 3.7% of the population, while Evangelicals account for only about 0.1%.
In the Open Doors 2026 World Watch List, Turkmenistan ranks 35th, with Christians facing a high level of pressure.
For us, “believing in Jesus” may seem like a simple statement. But for some brothers and sisters in Turkmenistan, remaining faithful to their faith may require great sacrifice.
🙏 Pray that the Lord will protect local brothers and sisters in Christ, giving them courage to follow Christ amid pressure, and that they will support one another and not feel alone.
🌱 God Can Still Make a Way in This Land
When we see these circumstances, we may feel that Turkmenistan is a very difficult mission field for the Gospel.
But God is not limited by circumstances.
He can work in places we cannot see, and He can prepare a way in people’s hearts.
📖 Isaiah 43:19
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
💛 Perhaps we are far from Turkmenistan, and we may not know anyone there. But God knows every family in that land. Let us draw near to this land through prayer and ask the Lord Himself to make a way for the Gospel.
